This last week we were privileged to be in attendance for a back-to-back southern Califronia Jay Reatard onslaught, kicking off at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, and then witnessing a kick-you-in-the-teeth-amazing performance at The Ken Club in San Diego. Free pool, cheap drinks, and a trails of tears-like winding bathroom line, the whole sh’bang. Started the night with a sneak-peek sound check and closed it out with Jay cannon-balling into the crowd. The band stampeded through a 16-song set with no filler, stopping only with Jay kicking an encroaching photographer off the stage. A definite highlight of the show was seeing Stephen(bass) booting a drunken stage-trespasser off the stage mid-song w/o missing a chord. The show was action-packed, I have the bruises to prove it. Tuesday, Jan 27th, the fine folks at Merge will reissue two of the best and oft-overlooked albums to come out of the 80’s. No, I’m not talking about Standing in the Spotlight, I’m talking about the first two Volcano Suns records!
From the Merge website:
Volcano Suns were founded in Boston in 1983 by former Mission of Burma drummer Peter Prescott. In 1985, the band, with Jon Williams on guitar and Jeff Weigand on bass, released their debut album, The Bright Orange Years, and followed it up a year later with another classic, All Night Lotus Party. Both albums were originally released on Homestead Records but have never been available on CD.The Bright Orange Years is so chockful of catchy songs that it could be any other band’s greatest hits album. The opening track, “Jak”, is an addictive head-nodder from its opening bassline to its chiming chords and lyrics. By contrast, All Night Lotus Party is a heavier and darker record, with more distorted guitars and bass-heavy production.Merge will make both albums available on CD for the first time on January 27, 2009, with reissues remastered by Bob Weston featuring loads of bonus tracks including radio sessions and other rarities.
These will rock your face, do yourself a favor and pick these up right now. I’m still crossing my fingers for the re-release of the Suns’ ferocious Bumper Crop… hint hint, Merge. Oh, and while we’re dabbling in the wishing well, a Volcano Suns reunion would be pretty swell too.
It’s that time of year again… We get to take down the Christmas(or Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Jihad) lights, vow to drop some pounds, and look forward to the onslaught of music festivals for the upcoming year! South by Southwest gets a quick jump out of the gate, and has announced the first round of their 2009 lineup. Thus far, the lineup includes:

"I was at the Echoplex show and I'm jealous that you guys got to go to the SD show. It seems like Jay and company thrive at smaller venues. I've never witnessed such a debacle as the Doll Hut show in Anaheim. 3 songs in and the s went down. Awesome and disappointing at the same time. Hopefully they will keep touring before the next album comes out."
